at the Robotics Makerspace

Robotics Makerspace operations are conducted in accordance with the U-M EHS Makerspace Guideline and U-M EHS Machine Shop Safety for Academic Departments Guideline for the safety and security of our environment, faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

SAFETY RULES & EXPECTATIONS

 

  • Basic training outlined below must be completed before Makerspace access is granted.
  • Use of certain equipment is only permitted with tool specific training and during specified, staffed hours.
  • Proper personal protective equipment and attire must be used at all times.
  • Access to the lab is permitted only when another user is present and during posted hours.
  • Tampering with any locks or monitoring devices is prohibited.
  • Out of respect for other users, tools should be returned to their designated locations, projects stored, and residue cleaned up before leaving the lab. 
  • Report malfunctioning, damaged, or missing equipment to lab staff.
  • Use of salvaged wood must be approved by the Robotics Makerspace Supervisor
  • Food and uncovered drinks are prohibited within the Makerspace.
  • Use of the Makerspace is welcome to all U-M Faculty, Staff and Students. 
  • Access is permitted during posted hours and only when Makerspace staff are present, unless 24/7 access has been specifically granted.
  • No tools or equipment may be removed from the Makerspace without staff permission
  • Makerspace workstations intended to interface with or control specific equipment resources should not be used to prepare your work file(s).  CAEN workstations are available elsewhere in the Makerspace and FRB for this purpose.
  • The Makerspace shop closes promptly at closing time. Cleanup begins 30 minutes prior to closing time. 
  • Access may be revoked for non-compliance with these policies.

OPERATING GUIDELINES

  • Robotics Makerspace users are subject to the Honor Code, which outlines certain standards of ethical conduct for persons associated with the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. The policies of the Honor Code apply to graduate and undergraduate students, faculty members, and administrators.
    • Students suspected of submitting work including Makerspace training projects that are not a result of their own efforts will normally be questioned by Makerspace staff and then referred to the Honor Council for investigation.
    • Other violations of integrity, safety, or facility provisions of the Honor Code will normally be handled as outlined below and may be referred to the Honor Council for investigation as deemed appropriate by Makerspace staff.
  • University of Michigan students are expected to act consistently with the values of the University community and to obey local, state, and federal laws. Any reports regarding behavior that reflects negatively upon the University may result in disciplinary action consistent with the policies of the College of Engineering, the Student Organization Accountability Process, the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities, and the Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct Policy.
  • Student organizations supported by the Robotics Makerspace are expected to maintain sponsored or voluntary status and to act consistently with the values of the University community and with the Standards of Conduct for Recognized Student Organizations.
  • Violations of these guidelines will be addressed in a timely manner by Robotics Makerspace management, ideally within 5 working days. Violators will be afforded due process in reviewing violations, in consultation with appropriate authorities. Violations not addressed by referral to other authorities (e.g. Honor Council, OSCR, ECRT) will be investigated by the Wilson Center Director and Robotics Institute Managing Director Consequences for failing to meet these community expectations may be temporary or permanent, may be imposed while other accountability processes are pending, and may include, but are not limited to:
    • Removal of access to the Robotics Makerspace
    • Restriction of access to certain tools or resources
    • Reduction or removal of project workspace
