Basic Workshop Safety Training I – Required for all Wilson Center users

  • This course introduces basic safety principles broadly applicable in a variety of laboratory, workshop, and job site environments 

    • Safety Policy and Honor Code

    • Housekeeping standards
    • Hazardous material storage and disposal
    • Fire, severe weather, and accident response

Basic Workshop Safety Training II – Required for all Wilson Center users

  • Prerequisite: Basic I
  • This course introduces metalworking skills and tools required to complete a practicum project and to safely use the Wilson Student Team Project Center independently.  The course includes a series of short video lessons and associated quizzes to guide completion of a manufacturing plan for the practicum project, followed by a 2-hour in-person session to manufacture and assemble the project in the Wilson Center.  Completion of the course results in access to the Wilson Center.
  • This course includes the following modules
    • Project packet download
    • Principles of safety, project introduction, calipers – video and quiz
    • Sheet metal shear, punch, brake, filing & deburring – video and quiz
    • Horizontal bandsaw, drilling, tapping – video and quiz
    • Abrasive tools, paint booth, HAZMAT, first aid, fire safety – video and quiz
    • Manufacturing plan submission
    • In-person work session
    • Submit completed project

  • The Basic II manufacturing plan may be checked and the practicum project may be completed on a drop-in basis Monday-Friday from 12-6pm, other times at the discretion of Wilson Center staff based on workload and shop capacity.

Robotics Makerspace

  • The Robotics Makerspace located in rooms 1141, 1150 and 1180 of the Ford Motor Company Robotics Building is affiliated with the Wilson Center.  The Robotics Makerspace shares Basic Workshop Safety Training I and other machine training with the Wilson Center, and offers additional training specific to the fabrication tools available in the Robotics Makerspace.
